Increased Malnutrition in Eastern DRC: Making it a Priority

$0 of $200,000 raised

According to the National Nutrition Program (PRONANUT), every year, “160,000 children die in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to malnutrition caused by delayed physical and intellectual growth as well as poor dietary practices.”

Referring to the latest United Nations report, the number of internally displaced persons in the DRC has approximately reached 6.4 million individuals, concentrated in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.

The Acute Malnutrition IPC analysis, conducted in October 2023, reports that nearly 1.1 million children under the age of five and approximately 605,119 pregnant or lactating women are likely to suffer from acute malnutrition between July 2023 and June 2024 in 122 health zones analyzed out of the total 519 health zones in the country. Among these children, more than 250,000 are severely malnourished and require urgent intervention. This partial coverage of the country provides an insight into the severity of acute malnutrition in the most affected health zones in the DRC.

The situation deteriorates with each passing day, with a high risk of exposure to opportunistic diseases due to malnutrition in displacement camps and some orphanages.

Having observed the situation and assessed the needs, we assert that urgent intervention against this malnutrition crisis is urgently needed.

The essence of this campaign lies in the nutritional and medical care of women and children suffering from acute malnutrition, accompanied by screening and prevention interventions, to reduce the vulnerability of affected individuals. Thus, an emergency mobile nutrition center led by our qualified technical team will be implemented.

Therefore, BSAVED appeals to all its donors, partners, and individuals of goodwill from around the world to financially and materially support us so that together we can rescue these innocents from this grim situation, which constitutes a first-degree humanitarian emergency.

Every life matter, let’s make a difference!
